Tenement Dining

Last night my sister had one of her monthly diners. Every diner takes place in a different location. This one was extra special because it took place in an abandoned tenements in the Lower East Side. I got there early to set up and no joke the shit was mad scary. I was rolling through the place with a little candle the whole way up… it turned out really good though. Here some pics.

Meschiya Lake

Sorry for the lack of posting this weekend, was busy all day saturday. Well, it was actually just a beautiful day and I didn’t want to spend it on the computer. I got a chance to see Meschiya Lake in Washington Square Park saturday afternoon. She was great, and very nice person also! This morning I went down to the bike jumble and picked up a bike. It’s nothing special, and I’m having a slight issue with buyers remorse, but it wasn’t all that expensive. There’s some fun stuff coming up this week and weekend that I’ll be posting up here shortly.

In the meantime, watch this video I took of Meschiya Lake. I’m not steady recording in the beginning but it gets a little better. You can check out the other blog I posted about her HERE

Buzzcocks Bomb Scare

Ok, so the Buzzcocks themselves didn’t do anything, but one of their fans did… well, he didn’t really either. Last night the classic 1970′s punk band played for the first time in years at Irving Plaza, and we’re briefly interupted by yet another bomb scare. Police found two gas cans in a parked car in Union Square close to Irving Plaza during the set, and evacuated some buildlings in Union Square.

Turns out the car belonged to a Buzzcocks fan at the show who mows lawns for a living. He of course was not trying to blow up Union Square, as the gas cans were meant for his lawn mower. I guess when you compare this case to the cooler filled with water bottles, it doesn’t seem so stupid. I was down there last night and left around 10 o’clock, only about 15 minutes before police sealed off the area. You can read the full article here:

A Trip to 1925… With 2010 Prices

I recently stumbled upon a blog that highlighted the Upper East Side’s more “historical” places. It mostly touched on Hungarian and German deli’s that have been around for decades, but one place in particular caught my eye. The place was Lexington Candy Shop, a soda fountain that has been around since 1925. They serve malted milkshakes, egg creams, as well as food, and try to keep a 1920′s feel throughout the place.

I ordered a malted milkshake, because I wanted a taste of the “real” soda fountain drinks from that era. I was surprised this place never caught my attention, as I have walked by it dozens of times. The inside seemed authentic enough, and the milkshake was excellent. That is, until it was time to pay up. I spent eight dollars on that milkshake. Yes, eight dollars. For somebody on a (very) tight budget, those were eight very important dollars.

The milkshake was good, but not worth eight bucks. Sure, if you want to go to an old-style soda fountain, this place is great, but just be prepared to scratch dinner for the night… and breakfast for the morning.

A Little New Orleans in New York

Meschiya Lake and Her Little Horn Band, a jazz group from New Orleans, are in New York for the next couple of weeks. They are playing at few bars around mostly Brooklyn the next few weeks, but will also be busking in Washington Square Park during the day. From what I’ve checked out, this is one impressive group, and I’ll definitely be heading down to Washington Square Park this weekend to check them out. Here’s some more information and dates they’re playing:

Thursday May 13th – Barbes, 376 9th St. Brooklyn 10-midnight

Friday, May 14th – Cafe Moto, 394 Broadway, Brooklyn 9pm

Sunday, May 16th – Jalopy, 315 Columbus St Redhook, Brooklyn, 8pm

You heard it, Block Party

On my walk to school everyday i’ve been seeing this whole block full of empty store fronts. These stores still have the signs of their previous owners. In the windows of all these shops there are art pieces that are put out all day and all night for the community to see. On my walk today I spoke to someone working on the shops and asked what the deal with all these “abandoned” stores were. I was told that someone had bought them all because they planned on building condos. The budget was too high and they did not have enough money to build so instead they let artists put their works of art in the windows. It’s definitely very generous. Anyway they are having a block party friday May 14 in celebration of the storefronts anniversary. Come by and check it out, it’s on the corner of Duffieild st. and Willoughby st. in Downtown Brooklyn.

subway tunnels

The last couple of weeks i’ve been taking the D train from school in brooklyn to the lower east side. The first time I saw this I was bugged out. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, it was really sick. Check it out it takes place in the subway tunnels on the D line, it starts from the DeKalb stop and ends before the bridge. It’s really amazing. The video is taken sideways, so picture it turned 90 degrees.
